Enter via Shimla, exit via Manali
The Kinnaur route climbs gradually over several days through Sangla, Kalpa and Nako. By the time you reach Kaza you have acclimatised properly. The Manali approach crosses Kunzum La and puts you above 4,000 m within hours.
Season decides the circuit
June to September opens the full loop including Chandratal. In May and October only the Shimla side is reliably accessible. Winter travel is a specialist trip with limited services and long cold nights.
What a good itinerary looks like
Nine days is the comfortable length: two days to reach Kinnaur, two crossing into Spiti, three around Kaza and the high villages, and two to exit via Kunzum La and Manali.
Frequently asked questions
Is Spiti safe for a first Himalayan trip?
Yes, with the Shimla approach and an acclimatisation-first itinerary. It is not a good choice for a rushed four-day plan.
