October to April — the clear season
This is the window for the Umngot river, comfortable trekking and reliable viewpoints. December and January are cold in the mornings but exceptionally clear.
June to September — the monsoon
Sohra earns its reputation in these months. Waterfalls are at their most powerful and the landscape is at its greenest, but expect sustained rain, leeches on forest trails and murky rivers.
May and October — shoulder months
Both offer a middle path: green landscapes without full monsoon intensity, and fewer travellers than the December peak.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Umngot river clear in the monsoon?
No. Clarity is a dry-season feature, generally from November through April.
