Meghalaya Travel Guide: Root Bridges, Rivers and Rain
How to structure a Meghalaya trip around walking, water and weather — with the routes, distances and seasons that actually matter.

Understand the geography first
Almost every itinerary works off three bases: Shillong for arrival and departure, Sohra (Cherrapunji) for waterfalls and caves, and the Dawki–Shnongpdeng area for the Umngot river. Nongriat, home to the double-decker root bridge, sits below Sohra and needs a dedicated day.
Guwahati in Assam is the practical air gateway, three to four hours from Shillong. Building a night in Shillong on arrival avoids a long, tiring first day.
Choose your season deliberately
Meghalaya has two genuinely different personalities. From October to April the rivers run clear, trails are dry and the Umngot's famous transparency is at its best. From June to September the waterfalls are at full force and the landscape is intensely green, but river visibility drops and trails are slippery.
- October to April: clear rivers, easy trekking, best photography light
- June to September: maximum waterfalls, heavy rain, fewer travellers
- May: green shoulder month with early showers
The Nongriat question
The double-decker living root bridge is the state's signature walk and involves roughly three thousand steps down and back up. There is nothing technical about it, but it is sustained. Travellers who stay overnight at Nongriat get the bridges without crowds and a much easier climb the next morning.
Practical notes
Cash matters outside Shillong, network coverage is patchy in the villages, and many community-run sites have their own rules on entry fees, plastics and photography. Treating those rules seriously is part of travelling well here.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in Meghalaya?
Five days is the practical minimum for Shillong, Sohra, Nongriat and Dawki. Seven or eight allows overnights and slower days.
Is Meghalaya expensive?
Costs are driven mostly by private transport, since distances are short but roads are slow. Stays range widely from village homestays to boutique hotels.
