Fort cities, desert and the most theatrical India

Rajasthan travel guide

India's most visited state for a reason: walled cities in colour-coded blue, pink and gold, forts you can sleep inside, and a desert edge that still runs on camels and folk music. Distances between cities are three to six hours by road, which makes a loop easy to build.

Ideal length: 8–12 days for a full loop, 5 for Jaipur plus UdaipurGateways: Jaipur (JAI), Udaipur (UDR), Jodhpur (JDH), Delhi (DEL) by road or rail

Why visit Rajasthan

  • Four distinct fort cities — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer — each worth two nights.
  • Heritage hotels that are genuinely historic buildings, at a wide range of prices.
  • Craft traditions you can see being practised: block printing, blue pottery, miniature painting.
  • Ranthambore for tigers, within reach of Jaipur.

Best time to visit

October to March

The season. Warm days, cold desert nights in December and January.

April to June

Extreme heat, often 42–45°C. Not recommended for sightseeing.

July to September

Light monsoon, green Aravallis, low prices — a real option if you accept some rain.

Highlights

Amber Fort, Jaipur

Arrive at opening; the ramp gets very busy by mid-morning.

Mehrangarh, Jodhpur

The best-presented fort museum in the state.

Lake Pichola, Udaipur

Late-afternoon boat, then dinner on a rooftop.

Jaisalmer and the Thar

One night in a desert camp is enough for most travellers.

Rajasthan travel FAQs

How many days do I need in Rajasthan?

Eight to twelve. A tight loop of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur works in eight days; adding Jaisalmer and Ranthambore pushes it to twelve.

Is Rajasthan safe for solo female travellers?

Many women travel Rajasthan solo without incident. The usual precautions apply — prearranged airport transfers, avoiding empty streets late at night, and staying in reviewed accommodation. Read your own government's current advice as well.

Camel safari or desert camp?

A short sunset camel ride plus one night at a well-run camp near Jaisalmer suits most travellers. Multi-day camel expeditions are for people who genuinely want the discomfort.
