Backwaters, tea hills and a coast that cooks well
Kerala travel guide
A narrow green state between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Short drives, high literacy, excellent food and a tourism industry that has been hosting international travellers for decades — which makes it the softest landing in India.
Why visit Kerala
- The backwaters: a genuinely unusual landscape of canals, rice fields below sea level and village life on the water.
- Tea and spice country in Munnar and Thekkady, two to three hours from the coast.
- Kathakali, Theyyam and Kalaripayattu — living performance traditions, not tourist shows only.
- Ayurveda centres with qualified practitioners, especially during the monsoon season.
Best time to visit
November to February
Dry, warm, the most popular window. Book stays well ahead over Christmas and New Year.
March to May
Hot and humid at the coast; the hills stay comfortable.
June to September
Southwest monsoon. The traditional Ayurveda season, lush and much cheaper.

Kerala travel FAQs
How many nights on a houseboat?
One. Boats moor by early evening and the novelty fades; spend your second night in a homestay on the canals instead.
Is Kerala good for families?
Very. Short drives, safe food in reviewed places, boats and elephants and beaches, and good medical facilities in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
Is Ayurveda worth doing in a week?
A few treatments are pleasant, but genuine Panchakarma programmes need 14 to 21 days and medical supervision. Be wary of anyone offering a serious detox in three days.
