  • Chettinad: mansions, tiles and one of India's most distinctive regional cuisines.
  • Puducherry for a completely different pace and a French-inflected grid of streets.

Tamil Nadu travel FAQs

Can non-Hindus enter Tamil Nadu's temples?

Most welcome visitors into the outer precincts. Some inner sanctums are restricted to Hindus, and this is enforced. Signage is usually clear; ask rather than assume.

What should I wear at temples?

Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, shoes and often leather items removed at the entrance. Carrying socks helps on hot stone.
