Temple towns, colonial coast and the Nilgiri hills
Tamil Nadu travel guide
The deepest continuous temple culture in India, plus French-era Puducherry, the Chettinad mansions and the tea hills around Ooty and Kotagiri. It rewards travellers who like architecture, ritual and food more than beaches.
Why visit Tamil Nadu
- Madurai's Meenakshi temple — a working temple complex with tens of thousands of daily visitors.
- Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar temple, a thousand-year-old Chola masterpiece.
- Chettinad: mansions, tiles and one of India's most distinctive regional cuisines.
- Puducherry for a completely different pace and a French-inflected grid of streets.

Tamil Nadu travel FAQs
Can non-Hindus enter Tamil Nadu's temples?
Most welcome visitors into the outer precincts. Some inner sanctums are restricted to Hindus, and this is enforced. Signage is usually clear; ask rather than assume.
What should I wear at temples?
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, shoes and often leather items removed at the entrance. Carrying socks helps on hot stone.
