Mughal cities, desert forts and the first Himalaya
North India travel guide
Most first trips to India start here. Delhi is the biggest international gateway, the Taj Mahal is three hours away by train, and Rajasthan's fort cities sit within a comfortable driving loop. Go further north and the plains give way to Himalayan foothills within a day's travel.
Why visit North India
- The densest concentration of world-famous monuments in the country — Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Mehrangarh, Qutub Minar.
- Short, reliable train hops between the main cities (Delhi–Agra is under two hours on the fastest services).
- Great range of stays: heritage havelis and restored forts sit next to simple family-run guesthouses.
- Easy to combine plains sightseeing with a Himalayan cool-down in Uttarakhand or Himachal.
Best time to visit
October to March
The main season. Clear days, cold mornings in December and January, comfortable sightseeing.
April to June
Very hot on the plains, regularly above 40°C. Better spent in the hill states.
July to September
Monsoon. Fewer crowds and green landscapes, but expect wet afternoons and some road disruption in the hills.
Highlights
Taj Mahal, Agra
Go at opening time; closed on Fridays for prayer.
Old Delhi
Best on foot with a local guide — Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, the spice market.
Jaipur and Amber
Two full days minimum; the fort deserves a slow morning.
Varanasi ghats
Sunrise boat, evening aarti, and a lot of quiet watching in between.

North India travel FAQs
Is North India a good first trip to India?
Yes — it has the best transport links, the widest choice of accommodation and English is widely used in tourism. The trade-off is that it is also the busiest, most touristed part of the country.
How many days do I need for the Golden Triangle?
Five days is workable, seven is comfortable. Fewer than five means long driving days and rushed monuments.
Is it too hot in summer?
May and June regularly exceed 40°C on the plains. If those are your only dates, plan the mountains instead, or restructure the itinerary around early mornings.
