Deodar forests, Tibetan Buddhism and the road to Spiti

Himachal Pradesh travel guide

The most accessible Indian Himalaya. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj hold the Tibetan exile community, the Parvati and Tirthan valleys are for walkers, and beyond Manali the road climbs into Spiti's cold desert — one of the most extraordinary drives in Asia.

Ideal length: 6–10 days; 10–12 if you include SpitiGateways: Delhi (DEL) plus overnight road, Chandigarh (IXC), Dharamshala (DHM), Bhuntar/Kullu (KUU)

Why visit Himachal Pradesh

  • Real mountain walking without technical climbing, from day hikes to multi-day treks.
  • Tibetan Buddhist culture in Dharamshala, Spiti and Lahaul.
  • A cool alternative in April to June, when the plains are unbearable.
  • Spiti's monasteries and cold-desert villages, open roughly June to September by road.

Best time to visit

March to June

Green valleys, rhododendron, comfortable temperatures. Spiti's high roads may still be closed.

July to August

Monsoon; landslide risk on hill roads is real. Spiti sits in a rain shadow and stays drier.

September to November

The clearest skies of the year. Excellent for trekking.

December to February

Snow, road closures at altitude, and a very quiet, cold beauty.

Highlights

McLeod Ganj

Tsuglagkhang complex, momos, and the Triund day hike.

Tirthan Valley

Trout streams, homestays and the Great Himalayan National Park.

Spiti Valley

Key Monastery, Kibber and Chandratal — check road status before committing.

Himachal Pradesh travel FAQs

Do I need to worry about altitude?

Yes, above roughly 3,000m. Spiti routinely puts travellers at 4,000m or more. Build in acclimatisation nights, ascend gradually and talk to a doctor before you travel if you have heart or lung conditions.

When is the Spiti circuit open?

The Manali side typically opens once the high passes clear, usually around June, and closes again with the first heavy snow. The Shimla–Kinnaur side stays open longer. Confirm current road status before booking.
